In 1840, Edgar Allen Poe, as editor for Graham's Magazine, offered a free subscription to any reader who could send him cipher he could not crack. After six months, and over a hundred solved entries, Poe published this cipher, allegedly submitted by a Mr. W. B. Tyler, to conclude the contest. It is widely believed to have been designed by Poe himself, and remained unsolved for 160 years.
